Let's be honest here, there is a lot of variety when it comes to roleplaying. Some people use roleplaying to create fanfictions in their favorite universes. Others only create original worlds and characters. Some roleplay by rolling dice and sitting in a group talking. Others write and decide things completely on their own (with whoever they are roleplaying with of course). Some participate in worlds where one person is the "Lord of the Story" and dictates what all minor characters, creatures, weather conditions, and whatever else do. Others share responsibility equally with their fellow writers and together decide where the story will go, what the weather is like, so on and so forth. Some write in script format, others in novel, others act it out in real life! The list of differences can go on and on and on. Hey guys! theapprentice here! Second post! BOOYA! XD So today, we are going to be talking a bit about giving you characters a voice. And it’s not as much their actual voice , but more the way they speak that we’re discussing. So lets say you have a character that…. had a british accent! Or maybe he’s chinese! Australian, German, Scottish, just someone with a freaking awesome accent! How do you go about writing that? Well, off the top of my head I can think of two general ways. Fake it till you make it. No kidding guys. I do this quite a bit in the roleplay physicogiggles and I are doing right now ( Apocalypse ). I have this chinese character named Sano. He grew up in what used to be China and has a pretty freaking thick accent. -_-’ No kidding guys, sometimes I regret making him talk like that. BUT! In the end it is worth it! Aside from being a memorable line from Hamlet or the name of a play about monkeys by David Ives, this blog title refers to those little things that make writing what it is: words. Think about it, the words in a book, play or movie, can really influence how you feel about the story. They either drag you in, or make you wonder if what you are reading was written by a kindergartener. The correct combination of words can make you laugh, cry, bang your head against the wall, whatever the author wants, as long as they are used correctly. Well, I guess the wrong combination of words can make you laugh, but that doesn’t work very well if the response the author wanted was to pull at your heartstrings a bit. The biggest problem that I personally have with words is repetition. I tend to use the same words over and over again because my vocabulary is so incredibly limited that I cannot think of any word to replace the “smiled” that I write almost every other post. I called a conference in my head and sat everyone (all MY characters) down and asked what I should do. And after much debate and hearing out each person present, I decided to talk a bit about characters in general! psychogiggles already touched on the subject of listening to your characters in her post "Listening to the Voices in Your Head" . But! What about bringing the dears into existence in the first place? Well, that can be a trick, or easy as pie, depending on who the character is (in my personal experience).
